Spam is the email equivalent of junk mail or nuisance phone calls.

Spam can simply be defined as all unsolicited electronic mail sent out in bulk to individuals/organisations that have not consented to receive it.

Spam comes under a number of classifications:

Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE) which usually advertises a product or service.

Unsolicited Bulk Email (UBE) which is used for things like lobbying.

Chain letters and pyramid schemes and emails relating other fruadulent schemes such as phishing.

Messages sent to a recipient who had agreed to receive mail but has subsequently opted-out.

Any email without an Opt-out facility.

Where an Opt-out facility is provided but it is deliberately misleading or difficult to activate.

Any email that does not have a valid address in the reply to line.

Spam is basically unsollicited email, usually advertising Porn, viagra or russian brides and things.

There is also another type of spam called phishing which is emails that try to get your personal details such as bank numbers or login details. These can be made to look like genuine emails from your bank, paypal or ebay for example or can say they have large amounts of money in a foreign country they need to deposit in to a bank account.

Never click a link in an email even if you think it is genuine, never reply to spam and don't click on the unsubscribe links this just flags your email as an active address and makes things worse.

E-mail spam is a subset of spam that involves sending nearly identical messages to numerous recipients by e-mail.

Most definitions of spam are based on the e-mail being Unsolicted Bulk E-mail (UBE). That is, spam is e-mail that is both unsolicited by the recipients and there are many substantively similar e-mails being sent. Spam is usually also unwanted, commercial and sent by automated means and some definitions include those aspects.

Spam is the term for emails that are unsolicited and are usually sent out as advertising. EG: Buy this medicine for 'adult theme' enhancement. These are often deleted by an automated SPAM filter employed by Yahoo!

If you are looking for an acronym, I can say that there is NO acronym for SPAM. It is a slang word for Unsolicited Bulk Email (UBE). Yahoo! Mail used to have a folder for it called "BULK Mail." It's unwanted e-mail that may contain viruses, pornography, etc... in other words, things that you should stay away from.

However, many believe that SPAM may also mean "sales promotional advertising e-mail." From my knowledge, SPAM is simply a slang word.
