Yes it is.

Some people who are not gay will call it a choice since it is something that they have no experience with and is something that they do not personally understand; the only choice is to either live a lie by pretending to be straight denying one's own feelings and attraction, live a closeted life and not tell friends and family who one truly is, or live an open and honest life.

I believe that they are born that way, it has to do with genetics, a person cannot help who they fall in love with whether it be a woman falling in love with a man or another woman, you can't help the way you feel about someone so how can anyone say it is a choice, I have never just said hey I think I will fall in love with that guy, same goes for someone who is gay, makes sense right?

Yes. It is true that a man can be born gay.

Now, it happens that I wasn't born lesbian, but my sexual orientation switched during menopause.

And it was not a choice.

Sexual Orientation is not a choice. It is an internal experience that is felt in body, mind and spirit. It feels to me like God's choice, however. Perhaps it is a gift. Too bad some religions don't see it that way. I wish they'd stop promoting hate crimes and abuse.

Gay people are born gay. Straight people are born straight. Nobody wakes up one day and makes the decision about their sexual preference. It's not something you can turn on/off like a light switch.

There is a great deal of scientific evidence that it is inborn. Beyond scientific evidence there is anecdotal evidence.

The fruit fly study is actually fairly conclusive. But the pheremonal and eye blink studies are also compelling. I've included links below for those that are interested. Beyond that, research increasingly suggests that at least for males, Xq28 is the crucial gene. I am saddened by this, because I believe that once it is proven, gay people will be wiped out -- and I think that is sad, because given the number of species in which homosexuality exists (see Dr. Bruce Bagemihl's book "Biological Exuberance" from St. Martin's Press) I think it serves a purpose.

In addition to scientific evidence is the anecdotal evidence. I never in my life had any sexual feeling for a female -- nor any romantic feelings. I have had romantic feelings for other males since 8. I figured out it was sexual at 11 and came out at 14. I never felt anything for girls, neither do other gay males I know. Some boys manage to suppress it for a time, but when it comes out they admit to having always had the feelings. Likewise for bisexuals, although bisexuals always have feelings for both, and therefore are capable of choice -- for real. Gays are no more capable of choice than straights are.

Kind regards,

Reynolds

PS To Incognita -- You are happy to say that "science" has proven something that I KNOW as an academic that science has NOT proven. I demand your citations. I would be amazed to find that they go to work by anyone other than a tiny handful of professionals who deliberately choose to alter their scientific findings in favor of their religious ideology -- if in fact, such studies even exist from that amazingly small group -- the lack of any attempt to cite anything to prove your outrageous and false assertion is suspicious at best -- in that it implies you are making up your assertion out of completely whole cloth. Please do not hesitate to either post your citations here -- I've "watched" this question and will come back to look again -- or email me directly at believeinyou24@yahoo.com, and I will post them, with appropriate refutation. -- Regards -- Reyn

I was born gay. Every other LGBT person I know says they were born that way, too.

yes, it is...and women as well. we are all born pre-disposed to one sexual orientation or another. just like people are born white, or black, or blue-eyed or brown-eyed. a lot of bigots claim this isn't possible...that this is something we "choose" or something happens to make us "turn" gay. and yet, when we ask them if they were born straight or when they "chose" to be straight...they think THAT is a ridiculous question?
