My son got a new electric guitar for Christmas and I was thinking about how he can keep it in tune. I remembered there used to be a Beatles cartoon series. At the beginning of each show they slowly plucked the 6 guitar strings: E-A-D-G-B-E. I've always remembered that sound.

That got me to thinking about how big The Beatles were it. There have always been new, great musical acts coming along, but I don't think anyone has been nearly as big as The Beatles since then.

By biggest I mean most popular. I'm not saying the best or the most sales dollars. In my opinion the only other musical acts that rivalled The Beatles for "bigness" were Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson, but I don't think they were as big.

What other musical act has had a cartoon series on a major network? What other musical act had four major motion pictures made about them? What other musical act changed our culture in ways beyond music such as long hair, drugs, and sex?

Who was the biggest?

Some people are saying MC Hammer. MC Hammer? I'm shocked! Was Vanilla Ice the second biggest? MC Hammer had one hit song and he stole that from Rick James. MC Hammer is a Deion Sanders wannabe and Deion Sanders is over the hill.

Without a doubt the Beatles were the biggest musical act of all time. No one had or ever will achieve their sucess. Not only were they influencial musicans but they pretty muched shaped popular culture for the second half of the 20th century. However I have to give an honorable mention to The Rolling Stones becuase they're still going at it today. You have to give it to a group of dudes who stay together for more than 40 years now.

The Jackson 5 had a Saturday morning cartoon but that doesn't put them in league with the Beatles. No one is in their league. Like the asker hinted at in the question, they not only influenced music, but society overall. Their impact is still being felt over 30 years after they broke up (DAMN YOU YOKO).
