I took a couple of college classes in proofreading, and you just read over the item somewhat slowly, checking for errors. As you locate the errors, you make small notations (which are in themselves special marks), above the errors. After a while, I found I was able to breeze through quite quickly.
The downside is that now I find myself unable to read anything at all without proofreading it.

When I worked at a local newspaper, the editor believed it was not necessary to employ proofreaders. There was not one edition that was free of errors.
