Why, if you tell someone that you live in america do they assume that you are refering to the United States? Are there not many other countrys on both north and south america? Besides, I didn't even use the word America. Some people are so narrow minded.

because the USA was built on rebellions and are still known as rebels around the world (see fascination with wild wild west, etc). whether this is good or bad is not important. So, when you start talking about rebelling while speaking English, this is where people's minds go. And people assume when you say America that you're talking about the US, because they assume if you meant Canada you'd be polite and say Canada, and if you meant any of the countries in South American again you'd be polite and name them. How rude would it be to go around calling Canadians, Americans, and Argentines, Americans, etc.

The USA is the most powerful country in the world. Therefore it is the country with the most prestige and notability. There is more knowledge in the general public about the USA than of any of the other america's. Also, because of Iraq, the world has its eye on the USA. It is just a natural human instinct.
