The spoon have been around for thousands of years - the fork is relatively a new instrument for an eating utensil only going back in time to be counted in centuries while the spoon goes back thousands of years. The first spoons were leaves or shells. The first forks were sticks. Our hominid ancestors discovered both as among the first tools. The stick was probably the first.

The fork, as we know it, to set the table, is actually quite recent.
Only knifes and spoons existed before.
