Your feet are going to perspire into the socks to create just enough moisture which, combined with the warmth can trigger the growth of any bacteria present that can lead to athelete's foot and/or nail fungus. Even if you don't seem to have got your socks overly dirty after one wearing, that's why it's important to not wear them twice without washing
Buy yourself enough socks, and you'll never be without a clean pair. Plus you will stay free from some very troublesome foot conditions. These are the only two "plates o' meat" you are ever going to have, and they're going to have to work hard for you till you're done with 'em. Take care of them and they will take care of you.

After each wearing. The thought of putting on used socks is gross.

If you want atheletes feet or you are just chasing off all people in your life by all means keep them on,but my advice, wear once and wash. Don't you bathe? Why put on smelly socks after cleaning. YUK!!!!
