A few weeks ago a memo came round the office informing us that due to difficult trading conditions that the company where looking for volentary redundencies and early retirement. After careful consideration, I'm not getting any younger, need a change of pace etc. I, with a heavy heart, put myself forward for early retirement. Now they have thrown it back in my face. They claim you can't retire 35+ years before the state retirement age...they are the ones who wanted volunteers for early retirement. Does anyone think I have a case for age descrimination? Your thoughts please

Well, you can't really "retire" just to get a new job somewhere else. That's called quitting. If you are in your 30's then I don't see you having much of a case for quitting your job and expecting all the benefits of early retirement. I would look into your company's retirement policy. It may say that you have to reach a certain age before you qualify for early retirement.

I like your reasoning. I think the crux of this matter is to determine exactly what is meant by 'early' in early retirement... ascertain what the legal stance is on retirement and just how early is early? Good try, but redundancy is the better option for you as if you take early retirement you will not get a penny from the firm and you will get nothing from the government as regards your pension. So take redundancy and then get a better job.

Nice try, but I think you have to be at least 55 years old to take "early" retirement - you should have a copy of the Company's leave and retirement regulations.

You have to be a certain age to claim early retirement; it's not age discrimination, it's simply the way it is.

Good try!

In most countries... the retirement age is still 60 or 65.

Until then... you have to work my friend...

That is... if you want to keep on living...
