Some departments run their own impound lots, some use private contractors and some use city or county owned lots. You may also see a combination of private and government lots.

For example, in my area, tow companies are used to impound vehicles, and they provide the storage lots for most of these cars. Certain vehicles, like drug seizures, are held in a county owned impound lot, while abandoned vehicles are held in a different county lot.

The best thing to do is call the police to see who impounded your vehicle, and where you have to go to get it back!

Police departments do not have impound lots. It would be a conflict of interest.

It is usually out=sourced to a contractor.
