I had problems and gave up on Norton too just 3 months into a years contract. Found Freedom from what was adelphia for free and have been very pleased with the job it's doing for me.
Yahoo has a free tool bar, though I've never tried it.
Authentic-ID Toolbar by Bluecase Software is another free down loadable site.
Internet Explorer offers several free sites and Microsoft had windows defender to download for free.

I like AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)

And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

As mentioned by many, AVG Free by Grisoft is absolutely the best free anti virus software available. Plus it can be setup to automatically update itself as new viruses become known. I've used it for years and nothing has got past it in all that time.

AVG free edtion is one of the best free antiviruses around and you can then use your own windows firewall to stop spyware. You can also set it to update daily. www.grisoft.com
