I certainly believe in elemental spirits. I think trees have spirits, and rocks have spirits, and lakes and oceans and rivers and sky have spirits. And yes, many spirits stay in the same place and, as it is part of them, "protect" it as best they can. Why do you ask?

There are many different ways to believe essentially the same thing. In Kashmir Shaivism and in Tantra (two philosophies which are very similar) there is the concept of "spanda." This is the life force of all things. The land, the mountains, water, the air all have spanda. And so do all people and animals. So in this philosophy, the same energy, sometimes described as "sacred vibration" or "sacred tremor," is in all beings as well as the land. Feeling the same energy in me and in the land, strengthens my connection to the earth, and helps me to understand that the earth must be respected, cared for and nurtured responsibly.

I believe that there are land spirits and water spirits who live in rivers and wells. There are quite a few mentions of these in Celtic mythology. I give offerings of food and drink or handmade gifts to local land and water spirits.

There are many who believe...

...and that belief shows itself in many of the folklores and beliefs that almost everyone at one time or another espouse.

"This place feels 'spooky'..."
"I 'feel comfortable' here....."
"This place 'speaks to me'...."
"This place 'does not feel right'..."

Many people used to believe in "house spirits", and still other felt that they had a 'guardian angel watching over them'.

They are feeling deep down inside them something that has been there always... and something that will always be there...

They just don't have a name for it sometimes....
