I have two ingrown toenails, I have not seen a doctor yet but I am almost positive I will need both of them surgically removed, the thing is I don't want it done with just an anesthetic, I would prefer to be in a deep sleep so I don't feel, see, or hear anything during the surgery.
I know ingrown toenails are common but if they have to cut into my toe while I'm awake I will seriously freak out. If I go see a doctor can I just tell him that I would like to be asleep or can't I?

An ingrowing toenail occurs when d edge of a nail (usually on d big toe) presses into d soft flesh on one or both sides of d nail, causing painful inflammation. This usually results from wearing too-tight shoes, neglect of d nails, or from cutting d nail incorrectly.

If u hav an ingrowing toenail, bathe d affected foot in warm, diluted antiseptic solution for 15 - 20 minutes. After softening d flesh, carefully tuck a small wisp of cotton wool under d ingrowing corner of d nail using a blunt pair of scissors. Every day, replace d old piece of cotton wool with a fresh wisp, slightly larger if necessary. The cotton wool helps lift d nail edge away from d flesh it is digging into d encourages it to grow properly.

U should als see ur doc. if d toe is severely infected or if u suffer from diabetes because, in severe cases, nail surgery may be necessary to correct d problem.

To help prevent ingrowing toenails, trim d nails straight across, avoid picking your toenails, wear comfortable shoes with sufficient room to wiggle your toes and walk barefooted at home as much as possible.

Thanks

This can be repaired yourself.

Take a couple of Excedrin or aspirin or any pain killer.

Soak your feet in warm water to soften the skin and the nail.

Rub the toe with Neosporin or even Orajel (it numbs babies gums while teething) Any topical pain killer. Chloroseptic is a great pain killer. If you have some of that spray it on. Pouring some hydrogen peroxide over the sore toes wouldn't hurt, it kills pain.

Now you need a pointed instrument, a round wooden toothpick will work. A cotton ball or 1 or 2 q tips, pull the cotton off the tip.
With the toothpick or small pointed tool gently push tiny pieces of cotton under the corner of the nail that has grown down into the skin. DO NOT CUT IT. Fill the space, it will lift the nail up to allow it to grow out level and straight.

NEVER CUT FOR FILE YOUR TOENAILS DOWN AT THE EDGES. FILE THEM STRAIGHT ACROSS ONLY.

Leave this in and the pain will go away. Add Neosporin or soak in Hydrogen Peroxide to releave the pain.
In a few days you can pull out the cotton and it will be healed.

Remember to do both toes. This always works for my Hubby, he never has ingrown toenails any more.

Happy New Year.

Before you cut the 'v' in the nail, soak it in warm water for about 15 minutes to soften the nail. It'll make it easier to cut.
You could also try soaking your foot for half an hour and removing the ingrown nails yourself. After all, they're only the corner of the nail that's growing into the toe and not the whole nail. Once removed, remember to keep the nails cut in a square shape. It's the rounded corners that allow the nails to grow into the toe.
You might also try looking at webmd.com and see if they offer some advise on home removal of ingrown toe nails.

I think most would be unwilling to put you under just for minor surgery, though there's no harm asking. But you'll probably be lying down when it's being done, so you won't even see what's being done (and to be even safer - close your eyes!), and after the initial analgesic prick, won't even feel much of the rest. As for not hearing anything... ask your doc to keep mum! =P You could probably also ask for a mild sedative / relaxant if you're really that nervous.
