- I made a promise to my son when he was 13 that if he got a full-ride scholarship to Princeton University, I would get him a Dodge Viper, and he did. The scholarship was privately granted. He is extremely bright, and overall excellent person, and terrific at driving manuals. I am not sure, because of the fact that students have an outdoor public parking lot(s), and it might (probably) would be trashed. I am also not sure if there is a private parking garage in Princeton relatively close to campus. What do you think?

Well, you should reward your son as it was promised. Buy a good insurance if you are worried about the car !!!

Princeton doesn't allow freshmen to have cars on campus. He's going to have to wait another year. But don't worry, Princeton is in a wonderful, safe neighborhood where you don't have to worry a thing about your son's car getting trashed. Generally, the only sorts of crimes that occur on campus are bikes getting stolen because the bike owner got lazy and doesn't feel like locking his bike anymore. And even then, the people who "borrow" the bike sometimes return it after they got back from the class they were late for.

Also, yes, there is a several stories high parking structure on campus that is accessible to students.

At this point, I'd let him have it. If you're afraid of it getting trashed, just make sure he's well aware that he's fully responsible for it. If he can make it to Princeton on a full ride, I'd assume he has some responsibility and brains in him. Gotta put faith in him sometime. Have him help pay for the insurance or garage costs as a way to make sure he keeps good care of it.

Save the Viper as a graduation present. Seriously, one can be very smart and a great person. Put them behind the wheel of a high preformance car and you might get someone entirely different.

What you didn't say what WHEN you would buy it for him. Talk it over with him. It will be his car. If he is a bright as you say, he will have the right answers, or at least the answers that are right for him. The rest is his thing and what happens...happens.

Unless...you are trying to renege on the promise. I think if that wasn't the motivation for your question, it would have been worded a bit differently. But that is YOUR thing...and what happens...happens

Two points:

1) Speed thrills. I know. If you've ever been over 140mph, you'll know, too.

2) Speed kills. Seen it. Scraped up the results. Hope you got good insurance on the kid.

Now...what do YOU think?

You made the deal don't back out now. What kind of message would you give him if you back out?
