The first computer, or "modern computer" was invented in World War II by a German engineer, Konrad Zuse in 1941 called the Z3.

It's a hard question to answer because not everybody agrees on what a computer is. The answer I like is "the British codebreakers". I think what we identify as a computer was invented first by British cryptographers working on German ciphers in the mid 1940's. The specific British cryptographer is in dispute, but saying that Alan Turing invented the computer won't be far off the mark.
