The two things you are going to need to do are study and play. There is a prolific author by the name of Bruce Pandolfini, start reading his books. He is not the world champion but he is an especially good teacher for the untrained. Most communities do have chess clubs that meet in schools and/or libraries. join one of these and watch as your play evolves into that of a good player. Have fun, its a great game.
