Mahatma Gandhi (whose formal name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi) was a Bar at law and he moved over to India from South Africa and got his inspiration from Gopal Krishna Gokahaley. Gandhi's contribution to India and the world was Non-violence (Ahimsa) which has been followed by leaders like Martin Luther King, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mendela and Dalai Lama to name a few famous leaders. Mahatama Gandhi was a good author too. He was shot by a fellow Indian for ideological reasons on January 30, 1948. You can find lot of details if you type MAHATMA GANDHI in your Yahoo search box.

Gandhi offered his help to the British government but they were not much interested. Gandhi waited and wondered when they will leave India. Gandhi was a great friend of everybody except the people of India. He accepted the creation of Pakistan and didn't do away with the congress party after independence. In short this so called father did exactly the same with the country what he did with his own wife and his children.

Gandhi did contribute to the end of the British colonization of India but I believe his biggest contribution was to prevent India from falling into civil war after the British left. He was an amazing man who supported non violent protest and believed fully in religious unity. His attempt to reconcile India's Muslim and Hindu populations ended up getting him assassinated by a Hindu extremest.
