Hi, I'd REALLY appreciate your advice on which community I should live in with my gf in east bay. My new job is in Newark, I am moving in from out of state, so do not know much where to live.
The criteria is maximum 30 minute drive one way and very vibrant cultural/nightlife with feel of community. The choices I selected: Fremont, Newark, Union city, Sunnyvale, Milpitas, San Jose, Campbell. I chose above cities from the map, with general 10-15 mile radius. I have a car, so i am flexible, but also do not want to drive more than 30 min. We're in our mid/late-twenties. We prefer to live in an apartment or condo, hopefully with some nearby cafes, restaurants, shops, great nightlife, etc. It seems like all of these towns sort of blend together in one big urban sprawl, but ideally we'd be in an area that feels like a real distinct community with its own character and night life, active clubs/community, theatre etc.
I am open for any other towns that I may not know around this area.

I work in fremont. it is very suburban--BEWARE--it is also very pricey so i suggest buying instead of renting, rent for 1 bedroom in a decent apartment can be as high as 1700 bucks a month--no joke.

i digress...
If you choose to live somewhere besides fremont, newark, union city you will be travellin the 880 corridor. it can be jam packed both ways for the morning commute.

Milpitas is stinky and really desolate looking. There is a dump there. they are widening the freeway and it should be ready in about 10 years. yikes

fremont/newark/union city very suburban. not many cafes, not place to walk and get groceries.

I don't know about campbell, it might be more "collegy", but I can't believe that it is only 30 minutes away. especially with traffic.

I had a friend that commuted from santa clara and she said her drive was about 45 minutes...

hayward is kinda ghetto in some parts, but nicer in other and around Cal State East Bay (downtown) you get that collegy-cafe like--club feel.

the other towns just don't have it, sorry.
Your best bet for that is Berkeley, Oakland area--which is a longer commute definitely--unless you carpool

hope this helps
send me a message if you have more ???

good luck

Newark is a great place to live.
The neighboring cities of Fremont, Union City, and Milpitas are also great. Between these four cities, you'll find good restaurants, shops, and Newpark Mall (in Newark).

Nightlife!?!?....
Nothing much happening in these cities, but you would be right in the middle of San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco.

The great part about living in the Tri-city area (Newark, Fremont, Union City) is that you're far enough from the fast life of the bigger cities of the bay area, but not too far when you want to be apart of it.

But if you want "character" and night life all around you all of the time, I would suggest San Jose 100%. San Jose is a beautiful city but its just too big for me. I love living near San Jose, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Of these cities that surround Newark, you'll find the best apartments/condos in Milpitas, Fremont, and San Jose.

But....I wouldn't suggest living in Sunnyvale, San Jose, or Campbell if you work in Newark unless you like traffic. Trust me your drive will be more than 30 minutes.

Some of these answerers obviously have never been to Fremont.
Fremont is now the fourth largest city in the Bay area. We have malls (a brand new shopping center as a matter of fact) and many restaurants (any type of cuisine you desire you can find in Fremont). We have some nightlife, but nothing that compares to San Jose.

The Oakland A's are even moving to Fremont in the coming years.

The thing I like about living in Fremont is that I am in a big city that has just about everything, but I don't feel like I am in a big city.
These bigger cities are so crowded and crime ridden especially Oakland and San Francisco.

People that I know like living in Fremont and the only reason I hear for why some want to leave is because it is so expensive to live here, but it is that way in the whole bay area.

San Jose all the way. A couple reasons i say this is because if you guys like night life you can go down town and there is plenty of night life. You can live in many different condos and appartments. There is alot of malls and shopping etc. which Freemont doesnt have. Freemont doesnt really have night life either. Campbell is very close to San Jose but it is not considered San Jose. in Campbell you wont find very much, i believe that there is a museum or something and that is about it. The only down side to San Jose is that you might get slammed with high rent, but of course you would be looking at that problem in all of the citys that you are talking about. There are many restaraunts and so forth in San Jose and great nightlife which you probably wont find in the other cities you listed. The communitys arent right next to a cafe or nightlife but they arent far.
I hope this helps

I am in the Bay Area. I live in San Jose, which is part of the South Bay. An example of a city in the East Bay would be Oakland. North Bay would be San Francisco.

Hello

Strangely enough, most of the cities in that area are the same. It really is hard to know where one stops and the other starts.

The cost of living is very high. Most people do NOT work in the area where they live. It is really a giant bedroom community, with little feel of community. The older communities are north of Newark, plus a better night life. The emphasis around there is working and making money. Most people are clueless on how to actually enjoy their lives.

There are smaller places, but you would have to come here first and see them for yourself. Sounds like you have a lot to learn!

milpitas is also a great community, and if nightlife is what you're looking for its very close to dowtown san jose. Milpitas is also home to the Great Mall of the bay area. Most neighborhoods i've seen are very quiet and friendly.

With your criteria being a max of 30min. one way drive I would definitely pick Fremont. It really is a great city. I did attach a site below where you can find out a little more info. about it.

Mountain View has a vibrant city center. Most of the places you mentioned do not.

Palo Alto is very nice. My friend lives in San Mateo, he seems to like it.
