Because the minimum wage is probably higher than you find at home. 7.97 EUR per hour/$10.46 per hour.
That's what I am guessing unless I am wrong.

It depend from where you shopping and in which area you are living. Central London is expensive because of the high interest rates and tourist resorts. If you want to live good and comparitivly cheap life then move to zone 3 or 4, areas like willesdon green, new cross, greenwich, eastham etc. in these areas prices are cheaper and also not very far fron central london too. :)

Transportation and Housing in London is expensive because they are premium items and you have to pay premium prices. Personally, I love London. I lived there for 2 years; even though it's so expensive I'd move back tomorrow if I could.

Yes, the outrageous bonuses paid to City "executives" push up prices. But then again, that's the same in New York. Also, it depends where you live in London. London is so big that the outer areas, whilst not cheap, are affordable.
Also, dental care is very expensive in London because many British people have buck teeth.

London's expensive for everyone not just french people.
Its basically down to market forces (ie. supply and demand).
Real estate in London is limited and yet for some unknown reason many people want to live there. This means that demand for property exceeds supply, hence property prices are pushed up to even greater levels.
As people who live in London therefore have higher mortgages to service, employers will need to pay them higher than UK average wages just so they can afford to live in the city. This higher disposable income means that they can afford to pay higher prices for other consumables such as pubs, restaurants and cinemas. Hence the prices for these items in London is pushed up too.
If you've got any sense then you would get a job in London to enjoy the higher salary and yet live well out of London to enjoy lower prices. A good tip for the future is Ashford in Kent. Prices for property are currently very low in this town, even by Kent prices, and yet it will have a fast link train service to central London by 2009 cutting the current 1 hour 20 minute service to just 40 minutes!
The town is undergoing a period of rapid development at the moment in anticipation of the influx of people from London looking for cheaper property. Property prices are therefore bound to rise in the future in Ashford to meet this increased demand. It also has a major benefit for French people in that there is currently a fast link service to France through the channel tunnel. The current time it takes to get to Paris from Ashford International Station is 2 hours.

Because people in the city get enormous bonuses and they don't know what to do with all the money so the local housing market has gone so high that most people are priced out of the market and restaurants etc know they can charge what people will pay
