Try to remember that the past has already happened, and there's no reason why you should still think about something that's...well, in the past. Just think about what your life is like now, and don't think of what it used to be like. Sooner or later you'll stop thinking about the past.
If your past is bothering you a lot though, visit a counsellor or a psychologist who might be able to help you and give you techniques to overcome the past.
Good luck!

You ask a good question. What's important to note is that you asked how to *overcome* the past, not how to forget it, which makes this a smart question indeed.
This is what has helped me overcome the past :
1) Resolving to learn from it in order to either prevent history from repeating itself or to protect myself and my interests in case the event ever occurs again.
2) Realizing that I cannot change the past nor can I change others but I can change myself in the present and the future.
3) Realizing that I am responsible for my own happiness and that the purpose of life is to gain as much happiness as you can and share it with others who will appreciate your efforts.
4) Living my best life, meaning doing my personal best in everything I do, ranging from things as basic as maintaining personal and home clealiness, wearing clean, attractive clothing, and perfectly groomed hair to things as important as my school studies and professional pursuits so I can always face the world with my best foot forward.
5) Recognizing that I may always have feelings about past events, that something might always trigger the memory and the emotions, and that my objective is to learn to live well with those memories. Eventually, after daily living of my best life, the past won't bother me nearly as much.
Good luck with this, and I wish you the best.

Why would you want to spend time overcoming that of which is real? The past is something more to be examined in the truth, learned from, and moved out of. You can't overcome, overthrow, get rid of, rearrange it, or control it ...it's the history of one's life and family.

Simple but not easy.Focus on the positive. Can you forget the word"monkey"?Just focus on the positive on what you want on what is noble and act on.
The best way to overcome the past its memories habits etc etc is just ignore them and even if you fail again start again and again always.

I've done some regretful things in my past, some very embarrassing things and I've definitely made a lot of mistakes.
I've learned to forgive myself, and forgive people who've hurt me.
Both are quite difficult, but they can be achieved.
And by saying that I've forgiven people who've hurt me, doesn't mean that I've actually told them that or even continue to see them.
I just forgave them and then moved on.
I don't need people in my life who hurt me, so I make it a point to steer clear of them.
As for the embarrassing episodes, people don't lay in bed at night recalling all the times that I've made a fool of myself, but rather people are more focused on themselves, and they think mainly about themselves. And in time, everyone's memories fade.
I've also learned to laugh about the stupid things that I've said and done and that helps.
I've learned from my mistakes and forgave myself for those, too, and then put them in the past, and then I try very hard not to ever repeat the mistakes of the past.
We're all human and we all make mistakes!
The best way to overcome the past is to move on and get busy and stop focusing on the past or yourself.
Read books, exercise, find new interests, and count your blessings!
Be grateful for everyday and being able to wake up in your own bed, or have that first cup of coffee in the morning, or watching a sunrise or a sunset, or for chocolate!
Forgiving yourself and others is the greatest gift that you can give yourself!
You deserve to be happy, so allow yourself to be happy by staying focused on today and learning from every experience that life tosses your way.

Difficult question.
People always say move on, think of the future, set new goals and forget the past.
It is very easy to say it and extremely hard to do, believe me.
You have to believe in yourself, believe that you can move forward and achieve your goals without letting the past interfer.
Good Luck

Forgiveness, forgive and forget, Talk about it with someone who cares, like a priest. Let it go. yesterday is history, tomorow is a mystery, so keep looking ahead not backwards. I have been strugling with this 4 years.
