You will need to do further research yourself....In a democracy we have the right to choose who leads our country. Periodically elections are held so that we can decide which parties and individuals have policies that we agree with and thus vote them into office. You have a freedom of speech, religion, sexuality and the right to protest (peacefully) against any perceived injustices. Whereas a dictatorship doesn't allow any such basic Human Rights and in fact violently suppresses them. Examples being the former Nazi Germany and Soviet Union. Sadly there are still many current examples of dictatorships;China, Cuba, North Korea, Myanmar (Burma), Zimbabwe (supposedly a democracy but NOT in reality) and many more! Hope this helps a bit . Good luck with the essay!

Dictatorship primarly means that one person is at the helm of affairs and he runs the govenment with an iron hand according to his whims and fancies. Maybe like napolean there can be dictators who are liked by most of his people but in general it is not so. Many people are put into lot of hardship and are penalised for no fault of theirs. Whereas in a democracy it is "of the people, by the people and for the people" . It simply means that we select who will be the guardians of our country and we also fix a term / period of rule for them. After this period say 4 years or 5 years as the case may be these rulers have to once again face the elections from the people who have the key in their hands to whether to select the same party /people or a different set of people to rule the country. Also in a democracy there is what is known as the opposition party which has lost the elections but still are available in the parliament where they question the ruling party about the way they are ruling the country. This checks the ruling party to correct itself from the mistakes it is about to commit or has already committed. Also there is total freedom for all the people to follow any religion they want and to practice any cult they like and full liberties to purchase and enjoy anything available in the market. But the trouble is in democracy if majority are fools then only fools will rule the country and bring down the country economically / politically very low. Hope this give you a small outlook on democracy vs dictatorship. All the best.

Both 'democracy' and 'dictatorship' start with the letter 'd' but the two differ a lot from each other. The following points could be useful for you for your immediate purpose:
1. Democracy is based on freedom while dictatorship is based on repression.
2. Democracy provides elected governance while dictatorship is run by nepotic and fascist rulers.
3. Democracy reflects people's will while dictatorship makes people dance to its tunes.
4. Democracy promotes freedom of expression while dictatorship curbs it and even eliminates it.
5. Democracy and violence are incompatible while dictatorship is born out of bloodshed.
6. Democracy distributes the gains of progress while dictatorship concentrates them with the despotic ruler.
7. Democracy is welfare oriented while dictatorship is power oriented.
8. Democracy is a way of life but dictatorship is a way of crushing life.
9. Democracy promotes listening but dictatorship kills listening; one is a two-way transmission belt but the other is just one way.

Dictatorships tend to collude power to small group of people, and dictatorships tend to have cronies run the show in certian areas in exchange for loyaty, and also need to give cronies luxury goods to make sure they will do as said.
Also, dictators most times dont end up killing like Stalin or Pol Pot because they usually will try to buy off the oppositon or make deal behind closed doors for thier support, and minimize killing as the last resort the oppostion since uprisings cost more money.
Dictatorships in the end fail because people are not stupid, and realize thier being made to suffer from poverty, lack of freedom of speech, assembly, no one held account in a dictatorships unless A the dictator figure removal of the crony is easier way to deal with uprising, or kill of that section of population creating problems or buy them off in a way. Democray is better because people are held accountable a lot more so for ill gotten gains, critism make the goverment more representive of the people instead of the junta or cronies in the circle.
Finally, dictatorship in 1970s Latin America is a lot different than a dictatorship in Middle East. Junta in Latin America tend to want power to load thier pockets than rule every aspect of people lives while the middle east they tend to rule every aspect of life.
Some dictatorships will even allow opppostion parites if the gain from it more stablity for the cronries to grab loads of power. I figure dicatorships are bad overall because a group of people hold the power while 90% of the other people have no say in the process.
