Well, no matter what happens to us when our time on this place is done, we still impact those around us. I lost my father 6 years ago and I'm very thankful for the pics and a few of his mementos. They are a piece of him I can reach out and hold, since I can't hold him anymore.
And as far as leaving someones mark....I think we all should want to leave this planet a better place than when we got here.

While our own personal experience on this planet is temporary, there will be many more people long after we are gone. The only way to truley be immortal in this world is to engage the one's that follow you to remember you existed and remind others you were real. As such, many people wish to leave their mark on the world as a way to extend their life long after they are gone. On the flip side, for those of us who wish to remember the ones who are gone, and carry on their memory, momentos enable one to have that ability. In short, it is a simple selfish act but not selfish to the point of gaining from the loss of others.
