I have a friend who is in her late forties, she has raised three children one of which ( a boy) still lives at home. her husband no longer takes his medication for manic depression and refuses to go seek a psychiatric help. He has left her once before and came back after 6 weeks. This time he started calling her names and held his fist up to her chin. He acts as if she is his slave and he claims the house and land is all his. What guidence should she seek?

She needs to talk to his psychiatrist or at least leave a message with him that he is off his medication and acting up. If he is in a manic and/or depressive episode, she needs to talk with a public health person about the possibilities of getting him hospitalised. Sometimes this is not possible because sometimes the symptoms do not leave a bipolar person in a danger to themselves or others until it gets worse. If he refuses treatment, often there is nothing she can do. There are resources out there for her like the national mental health institute that can help her. Just google for the website. Another one that you might find helpful is www.bipolarworld.net or something like that. I can't remember right now, I'm drunk. Happy Holidays!

She should leave this man. If he won't help himself then she won't be able to either. He needs professional help.
