Well, it's scary. You lose your looks (most of us are at least a little bit vain!) You lose your physical and mental strength. Plus you move closer to death (the great unknown that most people fear). It's not a picnic.

Of course, there are advantages to old age: the wisdom that comes from experience, the peace that comes from a life well-lived, the serenity of being able to relax with the pressures of working life over (being able to travel & enjoy hobbies in your retirement or at least take it easy instead of going out to work) and knowing that you are approaching the most exciting journey of your life -- into the afterlife -- the hope of paradise, eternal life in Heaven. This body is just a shell, a temporary vessel. Why should we worry when it gets wrinkled and dies? It is only here for about a century. This life is gone in the blink of an eye. Your soul, your very being, the you behind your eyes never dies, never grows old, lives forever in some form in another dimension.

People are afraid of getting old because they forget about (or don't believe in) Heaven. They think this world, this life is the be-all & end all. This life is a gift to be lived to the fullest. But it's only the beginning...

People are in general afraid of change and losing control.

Aging is a process which brings with it change at every step and no matter what you do it is ir-reversible and cannot be controlled.

Also a lot of people come with a mindset that if you age you are not of any use.

People need to realize age is a price one pays for a lot of things in life like experiences, maturity, wisdom, memories etc.
Its not important to stop aging, what is important is to live ones life and let age continue to move on at the side.
Its not the years covered or left but what you did in those years or plan to do in years to come that is important.

TO age gracefully and elegantly is also an art.

Personally I'm not afraid of getting older except for one reason.....
not sure about over there but here in Oz it makes it harder to obtain employment the older you get I started experiencing this when I hit 35 up till then I had no trouble getting employment or holding down a job and it's more to do with wages than skills.

I can't speak for anyone but myself. I'm not afraid of aging, of getting wrinkles, or any of that crap. Your body is going to do that stuff whether you like it or not, so I'm over it.
For me the getting old thing was all about getting closer and closer to death. I've feared death for most of my life, until very recently.
I've spent recent months studying the mind/body/spirit connection, the reasons we're here, and what happens after our bodies die. I very recently figured out exactly what I do and don't believe, and now that I have that firm in my mind, death has lost all its power over me. I'm now free to do what I was sent here to do, and while I hope to live for a long time so that I can achieve as much as possible, the possibility of it happening sooner rather than later no longer freaks me out and sends me into deep depression.
Not sure if that's the kind of answer you're after, but that's what getting old was all about for me.

After 30 years of marriage, a husband said he wanted a divorce. His wife was stunned. "But Will," she pleaded, "how could you want to divorce me after all we've been through together? Remember how just after we met, you caught malaria and nearly died, but I looked after you. Then when your family was wiped out in a hurricane, I was there for you. then when you were falsely accursed of armed robbery, I stood by you. Then when you lost $50,000 on the horses, I sympathized. And when that fire destroyed your office, I comforted you. How could you leave me? We've been through so much."
"That's the problem, Jan. Face it, you're just bad luck."

Because you are nearer to death.
Because when you get older people discriminate against you. (You are supposed to be unable to think or remember things).
Because you have wrinkles, therefore you can never have known youth or love or sex.
Because your health starts to deteriorate.
Because youth is glamorised above all else in our world. (Youth is very exploited!)
People treat you as though you are invisible.
I'm sure there are plenty of others.

Because your family will dump you in a Nursing Home.

Because our notion of family no longer shows respect, love and care for the wisdom of our elders.

Because old ain't sexy.
