As in any word problem, you must be completely clear about what is being asked. I am guessing that the problem should be worded: "50 minutes ago it was 4 times as many minutes past 3 o'clock as it is now the number of minutes to 6 o'clock. What time is it now?"

I've always found that if one can visualize a problem it helps to answer it. Imagine a number line from 0 to 180 (0 corresponding to 3 o'clock and 180 to 6 o'clock. Notice that 3 and 6 have nothing to do with the mathematics involved in the problem- they are arbitrary as far as the numerical relationship is concerned).

In this case, x = the number of minutes to 6, and 4x is the number of minutes after 3. The 50 minutes that pass between the time it was 4x minutes after three until it is x minutes to 6 completes the 180 minutes from 3 until 6.

So, 4x + 50 + x = 180
5x + 50 = 180
5x = 130
x = 26

Therefore, the time is now 26 minutes before 6.

I already responded the same question asked by using somebody else right now itself. The time distinction between 3 o clock and six o'clock is a hundred and eighty minutes. First subtract 50 minutes from this to get one hundred thirty minutes. Then chop up this one hundred thirty minutes interior the ratio a million:4 so which you get 26 minutes and 104 minutes. The time is 26 minutes to six o'clock i.e. 5:34 PM. 50 minutes in the past it replaced into 4:40 4 PM that's 104 (26x4) minutes previous 3 o'clock.

50 mins ago, if it was 4 times as many minutes past 3'O clock.

4 times as many minutes past 3'O clock *as what*?
