Do you use dryer sheets or fabric softners in your wash?
The sensors in your dryer may just need cleaning.
Dryer sheets and softners tend to leave a film on the moisture sensors in the dryer which build up with time and cause problems like you describe.
Try throughly cleaning the metal bars on the ends of the paddles of your drum.
If that doesn't help then yeah it's probably junk.
Call a repair shop and get a quote for the repair (it's cheaper if you haul it to them rather than paying for a service call)
Then compare prices with new.
Depending on your unit you could be better off replacing the dryer.

Yes, you can usually buy a new heating element, but you have to be certain that is the problem. If you have a meter and know some about circuits you can find diagnostic info on the web or from dryer appliance books from your local library. Check the belts and bushings while you have the dryer open.
Be very cautious when measuring for voltage when it is plugged in or running as most run on 220/240 VAC these days.

before replacing the heating element, remove the screen filter. take a brush and dish soap and scrub it down to make sure clear water will run thru it. let it dry completely, replace and try again. just recently found out that the fabric dryer sheets will leave a residue on the screen that cant be removed with just clearing the fuzz. has been known to cause heat being trapped and fires because of it. just a simple suggestion, a lot less costly. if the dryer is old though, might just be time. this is actually the prime time of year to purchase new appliances..
good luck

i anticipate that is an electric powered dryer because you said the heating element. if you're reachable, you need to extremely replace that at a fragment of the fee of a clean dryer. in case you get it performed with the help of a few different person, you want to work out how a lot they're going to charge for section and labor Vs. the cost of a clean one and make certain. i does not replace it for an person-friendly element like a burnt element. my personal gas dryer stopped drying. I researched and positioned that the most elementary situation replaced right into a burnt igniter. I ordered it from Ebay (the community broking service wanted truly extra) and altered it over a three hundred and sixty 5 days in the past. nonetheless going!

depends on how your dryer is. I have replaced the heating element in mine before and it lasted for years afterwards. Call around to different appliance parts places to get the best deal. You can install it yourself and save money.
