and my stupid warranty isn't worldwide (I've moved back to the UK from Hong Kong!)....

Before you give up hope try it with some different blank media.
Sometimes a different brand will work fine.

DVD RW sounds to me like it is not dead...

DVDs take longer to burn...and that is because of Encoding time....if you are doing something else on the computer...you are causing more stress on the CPU that a Dell cant handle. I have had mine take about 90mins in encode time...but less than five in burn time...

Now...on top of that you probably have a bad setting somewhere. Try a different Burning Utility... I personally Use NERO. Never burned a coaster...

Another thing you could try is burn to an ISO file first...it will simply encode the DVD and put it on your hard drive so it is ready to burn....when you BURN an ISO it will take less time...and with less time there is less of a chance of errors.

no yar.. its not dead....
when it is able to write smething it is not dead..
you clean up the lens and try writting it
with less amount of data...
