Marseille is the second largest city in France and the third metropolitan area, with 1,516,340 inhabitants at the 1999 census. Located in the former province of Provence and on the Mediterranean Sea, it is France's largest commercial port. It is considered the Provençale capital, one of the Occitan capitals of Occitania and France. Marseille is also the capital of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur région, as well as the préfecture (capital) of the Bouches-du-Rhône département.

ive been there. its like any other city really. there is a big common area downtown. its got statues and shops and restaraunts. the drinking scene is kind of lame. its very touristy there. everything is old. there are thousands of mopeds and motorcycles everywhere you look. if you want american food, go to places with names like Bar America or playboy bar. there is nothing american about them but they serve burgers and fries. it is also a u.s. navy port so you might see alot of Americans there. the beer sucks. it taste like something died in it. if i had to live therer it wouldn't be too bad' overall its like any other city. The city of Tulon is right around the corner. they have a lively drinking scene there. Tulon is a happening hot spot.

Gritty but there is something cool about that grittiness, and it makes a good change from the pretentiousness of St Tropez, Cannes and Nice.

Hi

I moor my boat there several times each year.

I like it. It is no more dangerous than other major cities, and has a great atmosphere.
