for 1200 bucks you can get a high end inspiron 1705 from Dell. I am not sure if in UK you get ASUS or Gateway machines.
You can also try Acer -
What should yo look for ? - atleast a T5500 (if intel) and Geforce 7600 LE as the bare minimum with 256 Mb video memory
if you can spare upto 1500 bucks Dell's XPS systems will be ideal for you

In UK, I would suggest use desktop PC for gaming, and laptop for surfing the net/working, etc. Trouble is laptop performance cannot keep up with games development and therefore whatever laptop you bought today won't be able to play games coming out in 2-3 years time.
Given your budget, you can afford to have e.g. a £450 laptop from PC World (Compaq too!) and leftovers to buy a desktop PC with Intel Duo chip built-in (latest chip!). I know it's excessive but given your budget, I WOULD NOT waste them all on a laptop.

Check out www.stupidcheapcomputers.net They sell high-end stuff for less than consumer-grade prices. I have bought 5 systems from them so far and have never found a better deal or better service.

Not sure about the UK but for about $500 here I can get a Compaq V5000 that works very well for gaming. It has very good performance.
