There r many reasons ...but some of the most Important r:
1. it is the only game where we r truly world-class..
2. Indians r basically less offensive than many countrymen...they hate to see vicious pushing , running or hitting.
3. They like cricket because its complicated rules give them a feeling of watching a superior game!
4. It had a good opening in India because the English introduced it here much b4 we came to kno of any other popular sport...

india's national sport is hockey and we used to be good at it maybe a 50 years ago? an olympic gold medal is still a rare achievement. only paes and bhupathy have acheived a worldbeater in the global sports arena albiet for a period of 6 months. apart from a handful of medals in the asian games our athletes and shooters have never risen to the global stage. compared to this cricket has captured the fancy of the nation when as virtual outsiders they defeated the top favourites in the 1983 world cup and since then have always been a force to content with. the last few years must have been the best years in indian cricket with overseas victories, a world cup final, a batting line up including the likes of sehwag, dravid, tendulkar, laxman and ganguly is a proud display of abundance any team would love to have.
moreover it denotes modern india, not limited to mumbai and delhi, but the likes of irfan pathan, dhoni, sreesanth coming from b-grade towns and staking claims augers well for the future.
also one word about the normal everyday armchair expert who burns effigies and slanders in public, they should be made to face shoib akhtars toe crunchers at a sweet 160 km per hour from a distance of 22 yards in front of 100,000 screaming fans. i seriously believe they will wet their pants than hit glorious cover drives.

Over the years cricket has become a most popular game in India.
This has helped to create more hype for cricket and it has become a money minting game because of sponsorship rites, telecasting rights, advertisement etc., which other sports are lacking. While there is stiff competition to bag the contract for sponsorship, telecast rights etc. for cricket, sponsorship for other sports is very negligible.
