Just curious - did my family make it up or do other people say it too? (It relates to breaking wind!)

There's one listing for "stepped on a duck" with the same meaning on urbandictionary.com, so assuming it wasn't someone in your family who put it there, it has at least some usage, although it doesn't seem to be particularly common.

There's also a not very funny joke circulating that involves not stepping on a duck, but it's used literally in that sense.

I never heard it before!

but English is my mother tongue! So I can't truly judge if it is a family heritage or a common expression!

I've heard it a couple of times...it was used sort of the same as "he screwed the pooch"....meaning someone really messed up badly at something.
