Being looked up to (respect) only comes when it is worthily earned. And that is when the content of your character shows behaviour that merits honor because of your values, principles, morals or beliefs.

With regard to popularity and the 'X' factor, it's more uncertain, nothing easily defineable. But there are some contributing factors.

That's why, even if somebody is confident in their manner in whichever area, (conversation, fashion), it is usually deemed that they must have some ability in the first place (which is giving them the confidence).

But most of these seemingly highly individual talents or gifts in that area, can be seen as just as another skill that's acquired. And as knowledge is acquired, maturity is developed over time, and interest (or hunger) in that area is continued (some things do take hard work and perseverance), confidence will grow and anyone CAN be whoever or whatever they want to be.

People believe what they want to believe. I have met people that relish in riding the wave of popularity; to them I say "consider the source." If the people looking up to you are shallow and lack individuality, that should tell you something about yourself. If the folks showing you respect are accomplished individuals in their own right, achieving their goals and adding to the world that they live in, you may be on to something.
