A fibroid is a "leiomyoma" - this is a fancy word for a "benign growth of fatty and muscle tissue". Let me get you some references

Here - look at the wiki pages.

Most commonly the term "fibroid" is used in reference to a Uterine Fibroid (leiomyoma) but there is a growth of connective tissue elsewhere in the body that is called a fibroid as well.

Also known as fibromyomas, uterine fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) tumours of d wall of d uterus. They consist of smooth muscle fibres and fibrous connective tissue. Their growth is stimulated by d hormone oestrogen and they vary considerably n size.

About 30% of women over d age of 35 have fibriods. Childless women are at greater risk than women with children, and Afro-Caribbean women are at higher risk than whie women. Fibroids do not develop before puberty and shrink after d menopause.

SYMPTOMS

1. Fibroids usually cause no symptoms and are often found during a routine pelvic examination.

2. THe most common symptom of fibroids is heavy periods. THere are other less common symptoms, which can include abdominal swelling, pain, frequent urination caused by pressure on d bladder, and fertility.

TREATMENT

Treatment is rarely needed for small fibroids that do not cause any symptoms.

1. Women suffering from problematic fibriods are usuall offered a hysterectomy. For those hoping to bear children, however, an operation to remove d fibroid while leaving d uterus intact ( known as a myomectomy) is sometimes a possible option.

2. Uterine artery embolization, a procedure that blocks d blood supply to d fibroid, may b offered as an alternative to surgery. This causes d fibroid to degenerate and form scar tissue.

Thank u!..

That depends on where it is? I see a couple of good answers about uterine fibroids. But if it's in the breast, it is very dense breast tissue that feels like a "lump". These are benign and can become tender when one intakes too much caffeine. Personally, if it wasn't for the fibroids in my breasts, I wouldn't have anything to put into a bra.

simply it's an overgrowth of uterine tissue(benign tumor),it differs in shape, size, growth rate.the symptoms differes from one to another depending on many factors,it may be bleeding, very painful periods, backpain or sometimes there is nothing to complain about...about the treatment,it's treated according to size and site, and the earlier u discover it the easier the treatment.
Hope i helped......
