Mainly, through ads. There are many forms of them though.
Like the ones mentioned above, there are the Sponsored Links,
advertisements that appear to the right of the window when you search for a term. When you search for a term, Google finds ads that match the term ("targeting the ads") you are searching for and shows those ads.
Google also puts targeted ads in its email service, Gmail, and allows people who have websites to put targeted ads on their websites. If someone clicks on the Google ads on your website, Google cuts you a share of their profits (I guess they keep the most).
