You need to specify where the sparks are occurring. If it is in the food compartment, then there may be food/grease/foil causing arcing, esp. if there is a mica plate covering the entry path of the microwaves into the compartment. Cleaning may help.

If sparks are occurring elsewhere, there are several possibilities, such as turntable motor and wiring, fan motor and wiring, power supply, microwave shielding / guide from magnetron is broken, timer motor and wiring, light bulb socket, etc. Generally, these are not fixable by a consumer, so either repair shop or replacing the oven would be the choices.

Understand generation gap or culture differences. Your mother in law might be a product of thrifty family so she doesn"t like to spend on new microwave. OR latest brand might be complicated to operate. You know oldies are'nt well trained in modern technology like me.

Probarbaly a water leaked inside or the fuse of the power cord burned. Try replacing the fuse. If its still doesnt work consult an eletrician.
