I was taught that God gave his son Jesus to die for us and that is why we give to others on this day. I was also taught that it was Jesus' birthday and that we celebrate his birth by giving to others. Many people have forgot about the real meaning of Christmas..... :(

Well first of all, there are three parts to Christmas, the Christmas tree, Santa Clause, and Jesus being born. All of these were mixed togethor to create one holiday. How you might ask? It all started out with the Pagan religion and Christianity. The Pagans worshiped one tree that stood out from all the rest that didn't lose its leaves during the winter since to them it didn't die. Pagans were people who worshipped nature so thats how they came to be with the tree. Now the Christians came along and they were like, Lets have the Pagans join us and maybe if we mix our beliefs we will convert some of them. So thats how you have baby jesus and the Christmas Tree (Which as first wasn't called the Christmas tree. Notice the Christ in Christmas tree?) Then they were all happy when a guy named St Nick came along and got involved. Please dont get me started on his story but he got mixed togethor with the group. So now we have St. Nick as santa Clasue. Now to answer the question of why it is celebrated. everyone celebrates it for a different reason but tries to connect it in ways. Companies such as Wal Mart etc. encourage the idea of St. Nick so we can buy their crap. That how the whole giving not receiving idea came up. Then there is the smaller group, the Christians. The Christians worship the jesus idea but since everyone likes presents they don't want to be left out so they say that Christmas can represent jesus giving us his life so lets give each other presents. And the Christmas tree is off in the background somehow connected to the two. The color read for St. Nick and the color green for the Tree is just a small example of how it is all connected. The main reason any of us celebrate Christmas is because companies like Halmark and stuff encourage all of us to give them our money. Thats the true meaning.
