Because everything is OK these days. People have more rights and freedom to do all kinds of dumb stuff. I don't hate gay people at all but I don't agree with their lifestyle at all and feel its totally against nature. I also feel people should be able to live their life the way they choice and gays shouldn't be disrespected or ostracized. I don't think homosexuals chose this particular time in history because they are "social pariahs" or because they are trying to destroy America. There just sick in the head but not necessarily malicious.

They are pushing for same-sex marriage now because it is more accepted now than it was years ago. I believe they want rights because it says that they should in the Constitution of the United States of America. They didn't try when our founding fathers were writing the Constitution because it wasn't very accepted back then. But with our exposure to this type of behavior on TV and possibly a neighbor being gay they are becoming more accepted and comfortable in society, so they don't feel the need to hide anymore.

In earlier days people were more isolated. Contact was pretty much restricted to those not just in their cities but in their immediate neighborhoods. There was no cable TV and no internet, very little international travel and long distance telephone calls were rare and expensive.
Therefore, people were divided into two categories: The people we know and 'the others'. For people in our immediate socially interactive groups, there were rules which had to be followed for one to be accepted. In the times and places where more population was needed, those who were in situations where they couldn't procreate were looked down upon or ostracized. Old maids and confirmed bachelors were ridiculed or pitied and homosexuals weren't accepted at all.
With the advent of overpopulation, more births and large families were no longer considered desirable. Remember that just a few decades ago any birth control was considered socially unacceptable. Those who practiced it, didn't talk about it. But that changed with the times and now same sex unions are going the same way in more urbane cultures.
Our social circles have ceased being restricted to a few blocks in area and have grown to global proportions. We 'talk' via the internet to people in all walks of life and get to know them. Business contacts are international in scope, and people on opposite sides of the globe can actually meet! So it's no longer just the people in our immediate neighborhood that we get to know--our immediate neighborhood encompasses the world.
Gays are not really that different than straights. They come in all shapes, sizes, races, varied interests and mental capacities as do straights. The only difference is to whom they're attracted. If one is a good person and a contributor to society in general, how does what they do in the bedroom affect anyone adversely?
There are good and bad gays and good and bad straights--let's get to the point where we can choose the people with whom we want to associate on their merits and not whether they're straight or gay.....or what they look like for that matter.
We're now at a point in time when we're starting to be able to look at people as individuals and not have to put a label on them....and that's a step in the right direction!

At any given time, it's based on other social factors including religion. The United States around 1900 wasn't accepting, but it has been acceptable in other civilizations in earlier times (ancient Romans, etc.).

Times are a changin'. It is accepted more because people aren't as narrow-minded as they used to be. People are people no matter who they love. More and more people are realizing everyone deserves the same rights. They are pushing hard for their rights because they deserve them. God bless us everyone.

Why is polygamy now outlawed?? Why did slavery get abolished???? Why aren't you involuntarily fighting for freedom in a deadly warzone right now??
Wake up.
and in response to the comment below ("the world is getting worse by the year"), yeah i'd say that we are worse off now than when the human life span was usually no longer than 50 years, or when women had a fraction of the rights we do now, or when it was common to lose at least one child to disease in the first weeks of its life, and when slavery was legal. you are insulting.
