When buying tomatoes from a store. should they be put into the refridgerator or left on the counter? ... Which would make them last longer and keep them from going mushy too soon?

You're supposed to keep them out of the refrigerator, they last longer and taste better. You store them in the fridge once they have been cut.

You're best bet would be to get a food saver canister (you of course need the food saver as well) and put the tomatoes in there. Take out all of the air and then store them in the fridge.

They should be left and turned in a cool dry place (counter) until use like a tomatoe salad or on a sandwich then refrigerated (sliced or cut up) for 15 to 20 prior to use for best vitamin insurance and great taste.If the're over-ripe you can cut off any bad spots and ofcourse smell them, there's no mistaken a bad one.

tomatoes are NOT supposed to be stored in refrigerator. Think about how they are kept in the store. They are in produce, not in refrigeration. While we are on the subject, don't refrigerate potatoes either.
