Yes, very much so.
Europeans are so into minding their own business.
Americans are way too nosy. They are in
everybodies business. You can't get a dent in your
fender without 42 opinions.

I've found the two very similar. The perception is that the US is more intolerent because of some very vocal neo-puritans. I think social class has a lot to do with the perception of tolerence. Working-class people have a better chance of acceptance if they put up a good fight when they have to. Middle-class people may have an easier time once they've been accepted; they have more to lose if they're not. So, they tend to be cautious and secretive to protect themselves.

The short answer is: you can't generalize and a generalized answer doesn't adequately cover the situation. Besides that, there's a disconnect between legislation and reality in both countries - usually caused by police forces' ambivilence.

It depends on the European country. Gays are very accepted in places like the Netherlands and still face difficulties in more religious countries like Spain or Italy. But overall there is a sense of tolerance and acceptance in Europe.

American's have their panties in a bundle. I'm American so I can say that. lol

Most of the coastal or large cities in America are pretty open-minded, but go into middle America and people in general have a harder time accepting anything that's different from how they see themselves. Plus add to that the fact that they're probably conservative Christians and you get people afraid of something they don't understand.

Europe is more progressive.

Europe is more liberal and open compared to the US. As one journalist commented that the Dutch never says NO to anything. Europe have legalized prostitution, marijuana, and gay marriages. It is ironic that the modern gay movement was started in America. Also Europe is becoming more secular. They no longer see the importance of religion in their life.

You have to remember that the US was founded by the prudes that left Europe because it was becoming too secular and liberal... All of the Pilgrims were religious fanatics, so the role of God in the US plays an important part in the governance of the country.

Europeans have been around a lot longer and are more smarter.
Really, the two party system has hurt human rights in the US. Both ruling parties have to take a centrist position and are afraid of change. Human rights causes suffer because they are not always the most popular positions.
