Haha, I realized that a few hours ago, about the whole you don't have to pay thing if your Windows is not fake thing.

I couldn't download anything, care to figure out why? I just realized it when the site ran the validation scan. Hahaha... I'll ask my cousin for help. Thanks for all the answers!

providing yo9u are using official legal microsoft software, you can get an awful lot of useful utilities direct from the site. www.microsoft.com however when you do go for updates/ patches and most of the freeware they request (demand you validate your copy of there software. if the software is found to be legal and is not thought or known to be counterfeit or pirated in any other way, you will be able to continue with your download.
as for paying you only need to pay when you select an item they have for sale however the prices are always clearly marked, and unless you are a complete idiot you can not fail to spot the prices, and the click here to BUY buttons/ links.

so to sum up, just by visiting the Microsoft website you do not have to pay and you will not be asked to pay unless you are using counterfeit software or unless you visit a section of the site and you want to buy anything that is listed.

in general operating system updates and utilites are free to download as are office updates, most templates and some other useful utilities to enhance office. remebr too if your system has a copy of MS Works you are legal entitled to the upgrade price on MS offfice (so no need to pay full retail price) try looking at a store like dabs.com for the OEM versions of the software you need.
my guess though the question is prompted by the asker getting a new computer for christmas, and finding the update offer for VISTA in the box. in this instance YES you will have to pay if you want to upgrade, however the voucher entitles you to a hefty discount (or so i'm told) on the purchase price of the equivelent version of vista that replaces your new OS. if your system has XP home now then you will only get a discount on VISTA basic.

I'm not sure on the other discounts and vouchers. but remeber there are about four or five versions of VISTA, depending on your needs. The most expensive of which will be VISTA ultimate which has all the bells and whistles (runs happily on anything running above an AMD Sempron 3400 with 3GB RAM (speaking as i tried VISTA ultimate beta x64 and x86 with that basic system spec)

Upgrades, updates and patchs are free as long as you have a geniune, non-stolen copy of the software.

Complete softwares such as Office etc. are for sale not free.

In the web page, it will indicate if it's necessary to pay using paypal or credit card, etc. Don't worry, you won't get lost. Just read the web page.

it depends... if you already have microsoft products, some of the updates are free...

the only reason you would have to pay is if you dont have some major program, such as word, money, etc...
