Lewis dots are used to indicate the valence electrons for an atom. You would first write the electron configuration. The electrons on the last level containing electrons are the valence electrons and you would use one dot for each. If you are just learning about Lewis Dots remember you don't use more than 8. If you need to know why, you need to know how to write an electron configuration using orbitals (s,p,d,f). In general only s and p electrons are used.

If you mean Lewis dot structure of compound.Write the symbols of atoms present in the molecules.Show the shared pairs of electrons by using dots or crosses.Indicate the electrons of diff.elements by diff. symbols.Remember single covalent bond means sharing of two electrons
