This depends on how much you currently know. When I know nothing I read " How To Buy Stocks" by Engel. Great for telling you the basics on everything (stocks, bonds, options, opening an account, how a trade is made, etc).
The next book I read was " One Up On Wall Street" by Peter Lynch. This book was incredible. After reading this book, I knew I want to get a job analyzing stocks. This is an EASY and FUN read. This is a must own!!
Next you should read "The Intelligent Investor" by Graham (and Zwieg). This really is a great book.
Now that you have a good background in stocks, you can continue in the analysis fashion and go to Security Analysis by Grahma and Dodd (only buy from the first 3 editions 1934, 1940 or 1951. The 5th edition is NOT good. Graham was dead and didn't write it). Or you can move onto more trading type books like "How To Make Money In Stocks" by O'Neal. This is a real good book too. But his style only works in markets with a clear trend.
One of my favorites and it was the inspiration for O'Neal was "Reminicences of a Stock Operator" by LeFevre. Everyone should read this. Easy to read story about Jesse Livermore and his trading experiences. This was an AWESOME book. If you can ever find his original book "How To Trade In Stocks" by Livermore snap it up fast. There is a new version which is a nice supplement to the original, but the original has the ORIGINAL trading system explained. The new one doesn't and the old version isn't published anymore.

Well, investing is a very broad subject. And there are books that deal with different aspects of investing. There are books that deal with asset allocation such as "All About Asset Allocation" by Ferri. There are books about analizing companies such as "Security Analyis" Graham and Dodd. Books on technical analysis such as "Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets" by Murphy. Then there are books that are introduction to investing such as "Investing for Dummies"
Then about 500 others. Investing is a very popular subject.
For someone that knows absolutely nothing about investing, it has got to be a book like "Investing for Dummies".
For someone that needs to learn about valuating a company, it has to be a book such as one by Benamin Graham.
For someone that knows squat about technical analysis a book like the one by Murphy is must reading.
For someone who lost his shirt during the 2000 market melt down, a books like asset allocation whould have been a great benefit.
