How can we keep the nerve cells alive ouside the body?

I saw on tv about a scientist using brain cells from a mice to fly a simulated plane. I'm wondering about how long the brain cells can be used and how to keep it alive in the long run. I also need some more info about this.

You usualy dont; Its gonna depend on the nutrative gel used for the cells
