Was Jesus Born in December?
The Bible does not tell us when Jesus was born. However, it does give us sound reason to conclude that his birth did not take place in December.
Consider the weather conditions at that time of the year in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The Jewish month of Chislev (corresponding to November/December) was a month with cold and rainy weather. The month after that was Tebeth (December/January). It saw the lowest temperatures of the year, with occasional snows in the highlands. Let us see what the Bible tells us about the climate of that region.
The Bible writer Ezra shows that Chislev was indeed a month known for cold and rainy weather. After stating that a crowd had gathered in Jerusalem "in the ninth month [Chislev] on the twentieth day of the month," Ezra reports that people were "shivering...on account of the showers of rain." Concerning weather conditions at that time of the year, the congregated people themselves said: "It is the season of showers of rain, and it is not possible to stand outside." (Ezra 10:9, 13; Jeremiah 36:22) No wonder shepherds living in that part of the world made sure that they and their flocks were no longer out of doors at night when December came around!
The Bible reports, however, that shepherds were in the fields tending their flocks on the night of Jesus' birth. In fact, the Bible writer Luke shows that at the time, shepherds were "living out of doors and keeping watches in the night over their flocks" near Bethlehem. (Luke 2:8-12) Notice that the shepherds were actually living out doors, not just strolling outside during the day. They had their fields at night. Does that description of outdoor living fit the chilly and rainy weather conditions of Bethlehem in December? No, it does not. So the circumstances surrounding Jesus' birth indicate that he was not born in December.*
*For more information, see pages 176-9 of Reasoning From the Scriptures, published by Jehovah's Witnesses.
God's word tells us precisely when Jesus died, but it gives little direct indication as to when he was born. This brings to mind King Solomon's words: "A name is better than good oil, and the day of death than the day of one's being born." (Ecclesiastes 7:1) It is not surprising, then, that the Bible provides many details about Jesus' ministry and death but few details about the time of his Birth.

The general assumption is NOT that the new year begins on the birth of Jesus Christ.

Christmas
1.The Christian holiday which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ.
This Christmas we'll open presents then go to grandma's for dinner.
2.25th December an English quarter day.
3.The season (traditionally from the 24th of December to the 6th of January) around the celebration of Christ's birth.
The Christmas shoppers spent less this December, than last year, but our store will probably see just as many returned items during the twelve days of Christmas.

New Year
1.The first few days of a calendar year.
2.In particular, January 1 in the Julian and Gregorian calendar and the days following.

In about AD 523, the papal chancellor, Bonifatius, asked a monk by the name of Dionysius Exiguus to devise a way to implement the rules from the Nicean council (the so-called ``Alexandrine Rules'') for general use.

Dionysius Exiguus (in English known as Denis the Little) was a monk from Scythia, he was a canon in the Roman curia, and his assignment was to prepare calculations of the dates of Easter. At that time it was customary to count years since the reign of emperor Diocletian; but in his calculations Dionysius chose to number the years since the birth of Christ, rather than honour the persecutor Diocletian.

Dionysius (wrongly) fixed Jesus' birth with respect to Diocletian's reign in such a manner that it falls on 25 December 753 AUC (ab urbe condita, i.e. since the founding of Rome), thus making the current era start with AD 1 on 1 January 754 AUC.

How Dionysius established the year of Christ's birth is not known. Jesus was born under the reign of king Herod the Great, who died in 750 AUC, which means that Jesus could have been born no later than that year. Dionysius' calculations were disputed at a very early stage.

The actual date of Jesus' birth is not recorded Dec 25th is the date selected to celebrate. The important thing is that he was born. It doesn't have anything to do with when the new year begins--haven't heard that one before.

To really know where and when Jesus was born, go to a church and ask a Pastor or something.

The yearly cycle is detached from the birthday of Jesus. It was even decided before Christ was born. So live with it.

january 1 is the first day of the julian calendar...
december 25, the birth of jesus, is only a tradition. people only study the life of jesus and they came up with the 25th of december as the birth of jesus. the bible did not say when was the birth of jesus.

TRIVIA:
jesus was not birth in a manger but in a cave. the birth of christ in the manger is also a tradition.

the birth of jesus did not necessarily occur on dec.25, that is only when its celebrated. New years is not the explicit celebration of the birth of jesus, but the celebration of a cycle of seasons.

Jesus (not even his real name) was not born on 25 Dec., which was a special day long before he was thought of, especially in this country.
The church put him on top of that to confuse the people. Ask yourself what a conifer tree, mistletoe, and a yule log have to do with a jew from palestine?
