I'm 21, and I've noticed that all my friends are getting married. Now don't get me wrong, I am in a relationship, and am very happy, but I am no way near close to getting married. Why can't you just live together and be exclusive. Why does everyone want to get married?

I don't know why people want to get married, it's definitely over rated.

If you live together for a long time, when you break up, you get nothing. If you get married, you get half!

Seriously, if you want or have children you are better protected by a legal commitment. With that committment comes some things you may need like health and life insurance, and legal protection from someone taking advantage of you by putting you out of your home or taking your things and leaving. Also, it is harder to get divorced than to just move out. Hopefully, people think harder about leaving if they have to go to court. If you work at it, both lifestyles can work for you. It is your choice and your partner's. Don't let other people influence your decision.

"Societal norms" are playing games with you. Marriage is not for everyone, but love affairs should be for everyone. You can live together and be exclusive, but people (not me) will think you are strange. Everyone wants to get married for different reasons, but two reasons that I see are 1) the commitment is important, and 2) that's what people do when they are in love.

Commitment is so important and people are worhty of that. We cannot always be accountable to ourselves. So, when things get rough, we can't just say, oh, we'll just go our seperate ways. No! We need to work on all our relationships and being married and bing accountable to that commitment makes us have to work on our marriage. People are not animals to be thrown in the trash and forgotten about. Marriage is honorable and all people should be treated with this respect.
