im buying a chevy s-10 and theres a problem with the gear inside the motor but dont know what it is. I bought a new distrubuter and the gear works fine on it. But i had a friend who stuck his hand down to find the gear inside the motor too see if it turned when i hit the guy and it didnt move. if you could help i would appreceate it..

2.5 4 cyl engines in S-10 trucks have a fibre cam gear pressed on cam, and were known to be noisy and wear out. Take ol fill cap off v-cover and look to see if rocker arms are moving, if not the gear is stripped,

GM 2.5 LTR engines did not have a timing belt or chain, depending on the year. Early ones had a direct drive system with a positive gear way between the crank and cam. Later ones had a chain that drove dampened, nylon coated timing gears. When the nylon wears off the gears the chain gets real loud. They also had a chain tensioner that was made of nylon that when worn sped up the entire process.
Having a gear noisy 2.5 engine is about as unusual as the sun coming up in the east.
The only fix I am aware if is replacing the timing gears with new 'dampened' gears &/or gears/chain & tensioner.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Why would you hit the guy if he's trying to help you? Sorry, I digress...

How long is the shaft on the distributor? He may not be able to reach down far enough.

Not sure, maybe this engine has a timing belt. If you take the oil fill cap off, can you see the cam or a lifter?

If so, crank the engine and make sure those are moving. If not, timing belt is broken.

It's hard for me to believe that the gear on the cam is worn or gone.

If it is the gear I think you are talking about, the cam belt is missing a few teeth and sometimes fails to turn. I think it is time to get a mechanic to look at it. These belts are in the area of $100 and can take form 2 to 5 hours to change at whatever the local rate is$$$$$

Pull the cover & cam to inspect condition of belt and drive gear.

Most likely it is the timing belt.

It need a new camshaft. The camshaft is what drives the distributor.
