There are a few very important things you need to remember if you face an earthquake at night. Most probably you will be sleeping if the earthquake occurs at night. The moment you feel it, jump out of bed, grab your children and run for the nearest exit. Getting out is the best idea. If you cannot get out on time, take shelter under your door frame. It is believed that this is the strongest of in-house infrastructure. If you have a child or an old person who requires your protection, hold the person such that his/her back is pressed against your chest. Stand sideways under the doorway such that both of you are within it. Grab the person with one hand and use the free hand as support on the frame. If you cannot make it till there try getting under a strong table or bed. If the bed or table is weak then dont try it as this may result in your getting trapped. In this case grab hold of a thick matress, get to an open spot and fling the matress over you and your companion. This may trap you but it will blanket you against injury from falling debris. A few good pointers will be to try and grab your cell phone or cordless phone if you have to take shelter in the house. This may be very important if you become trapped as you can call out and help rescuers pin point your position. Never lock yourself in the closet or the bathroom. This is not an escape option and is a bad idea. If possible try to turn of the power in your house. This may avoid a fire from an electrical snag. You hardly get enough time to do all of these but try to do as much as possible. Overall the best idea is to get out.

Keep shoes under your bed. Something comfortable and easy to put on if you need to quickly get out of a building with floors covered in glass.

Keep a flashlight with it too.

Don't hang large picture framed art over the bed. Use posters. Try not to have large heavy furniture that may fall over.

A safe place is on the floor next to your bed. Large objects falling can fall as far as the bed.
