Marmite is an acquired taste. It's a jar of slimy brown salty savory stuff that is manufactured from the left-over yeast used to brew all that great British beer and ale.

A while back, some scientist discovered that the 'junk' marmite was full of vitamins, and so, instead of throwing it away, the frugal Brits began to season it with vegetable flavors and then smear it all over their toast -- a favorite snack for a lot of British children, ever since the World Wars.

It's also popular in the former British colonies, including South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. The Aussies call it 'Vege-mite.' It has a cult following among internet geniuses around the world because it really gives your brain an extra 'kick' of thinking power, especially if you eat a lot of it right before difficult exams and projects.

It's also one of the most famous hang-over 'cures.' It seems the massive amount of natural B-Vitamins and salts restore the body's balance, after you indulge on too much holiday alcohol.

I like it spread VERY THINLY on lightly toasted rye bread, with some diced fresh parsley or cilantro, but I am into weird salty and flavors. When I am trying to lose weight, I switch to marmite on toast, because it also is famous for stopping cravings, and has about zero calories.

A lot of people trying it for the first time might think it's too strong, but don't throw away the jar! Instead use it as a really delicious alternative to bouillion cubes in winter soups -- it really does make you feel more aware and clear-headed, while it tastes great!

It truly is a phenomenon - you either love and can;t get enough of it or, like me, you HATE it and can't understand how anyone can eat it. I describe it as Satan's toe jam!!
