There are two defined types of "mile," a statute mile (land) and a nautical (sea) mile. A statute mile is 5,280 feet, 1760 yards. A nautical mile (knot) is 6000 feet, or 2000 yards. The knot comes from throwing a triangular plate ( a "sea anchor") attached to a piece of twine over the side and timing how long it took to reel out an unfettered measured length of twine with knots tied at intervals. Hence the name "knot," from counting the knots in the twine over a period of time. They used 2000 yards as a convenient number rounded to make timing easy in decimal units. 5280 feet or 1760 yards as a measure is not a convenient measure to use at sea at speed on a ship to dermine speed. The statute mile was derived in England from the basic unit, a "rod" which was 16 feet. Acres are defined as an area bounded by a number of rods, and the land mile followed as a result, which is why we have such an odd number as 5280 instead of a round number like 6000. Blame it on the English for mucking things up.
