Actually right now I don't think it is, but at some point this year(2007) you will be required to have a passport to go back and forth from the US to Canada, so I guess you should go ahead and get one now-avoid the rush since it takes a while to get.

No, you don't. All you need is photo ID and something that shows your citizenship. But the fun part comes when you try to get back into Washington, because the US is the one insisting on passports. Actually, if you go by road you should be okay for a while longer, but if you fly you will need a passport or you won't be allowed back into the US.

Not at the moment, but because of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, a passport or other document that establishes identity and citizenship will be needed to get back into the United States, even if you are a citizen. Congress just pushed back the date for implementation to Jan. 2009. There are still groups looking for alternatives, i.e. the governor of Washington proposed a pilot project to use driver's licenses instead.

Passports will be necessary within the next 2 weeks I believe.

I had a friend who spent a couple of hours being questioned last week when he tried to return to Washington. So learn from his mistake, and take yours! It makes the crossing so much easier!

YES! Absolutely. Going in to Canada, the guards are great and the restrictions, well, less than strict. But if you want to come back into the U.S. you MUST have a passport, (Or be prepared to spend an hour or more explaining yourself to the INS - I am from Bellingham - we go up all the time, and coming back to the U.S. is always a pain regardless, let alone trying to do it without a passport)
Good luck!

The rules are currently changing. Next month you'll need a passport to re-enter the US from Canada if you're flying. As soon as January of the following year, you'll need one travelling by car. In the meantime, it's a good idea to carry your birth certificate with you, and definitely your driver's license.

Go ahead and get a passport if you don't have one--you'll need it soon enough, and it's a good idea to have one.

BC is astounding and as far as unique and nonjudgmental we could defiantly be the region to flow. instructions would be particularly greater right here than in Washington or Oregon, yet not by using a lot in spite of in case you're a worldwide student (undergraduate courses are especially non-high priced right here, yet once you're going for a graduate degree this is nice to to stay interior the states to maintain expenses down) as far as not freezing all 365 days around, they're all on the west coast so it is going to likely be especially a lot the same everywhere.
