By the actual leather, the hardware on the bag, and the style. The leather is rarely exposed on a coach bag unless it is suede, the edges of the leather are not exposed. One piece of the hardware usually has coach stamped on it. And if it's a style you're questioning, just go to the website and look at what they have, they will have seasonal bags but the styles are usually similar, hope this helps.

Sometimes if it's a signature purse, the fake will fave G's or O's instead of C's. Also the material won't feel as strong or smooth.
And the quality isn't so good and the zipper will NOT work, they are horrible. If you're going to spend your money on a purse, get the real thing.

Real Coach purses come with papers and the inside of the bag typically are quite ornate. I have a real one, and when you compare it to the fakes, it can be hard to tell. The inside of the fake bags usually aren't as detailed, the faux manufactures make it a point to pour their monies on the outside.

It's hard to tell. My daughter-in-law picked up a Louis Vuitton for me in Chinatown in New York City. The authenticity card inside the purse said Channel. That was a pretty good give away that it was fake.

Serious answer:
There is always a coach stamp stamped in the leather on the inside. There is always a coach tag made out of stamped leather hangin off the thing. Trim/etc. is always made out of leather (you can tell it is leather by looking at the edge or smelling it and stuff like that) Once you own a few and get a feel for the style of the old ones it is pretty simple to tell.

don't buy it off the streets!!!
don't do it, girl

the papers the stamps these counterfeiters are getting real good.
it's not as simple
i have coach bags and wallets and I've seen fakes
these ones around where I'm from (San Francisco,California) come real close to the real thing.
Some people don't care....it doesn't matter to them as long as it looks like coach
if it matters to you like it matters to me, go to your nearest department store and get one there

There is no easy way. There is someone posting a free service on craigslist where you can send an item# if you are purchasing on eBay, or send photos otherwise.
